Prayer Focus:
We pray for all those who are ill or bereaved and those who care for them

From Murray
Our new evening service – called Vine Time got off to a great start last Sunday – there were about 16 of us!  The service was very informal with plenty of opportunity for people to share thoughts, bible readings and to suggest songs for us to sing.  The dates of the next few services are:
June 17th and July 15th at 6.00 pm
Because Focus Church have their service every fortnight, the exact Sunday of the month will vary a bit through the year.
Thanks again to Jana for the beautiful and inspiring picture on the front of the Ten Days of Prayer leaflet and for the others which are up in church.  The feedback I am getting is that the leaflet is appreciated and is being used to make this a special time in preparation for Pentecost Sunday.
Within our 10 am service today will be the opportunity to receive anointing with oil as a symbol that we want more of God’s Holy Spirit in our lives.  In the past we have anointed ourselves with oil (from the font) when we have celebrated the Baptism of Jesus at the beginning of the year.
This time you can stay around the dais after receiving Holy Communion and I will anoint you – I will sign you with the cross on your forehead and on you palms and ask that God will fill you again with his Holy Spirit.
The bible used a number of images for the Holy Spirit – the dove of peace which descended on Jesus at his Baptism, fire which came on the disciples on the Day of Pentecost (we hope to have a fire when we go outside for the end of the 10 am service).
Water is also a symbol of the Holy Spirit and it is helpful to think that we are like leaky vessels – we need to keep on being filled with God’s Holy and life-giving Spirit.  So we always need to be topped up with more of God.  And it is good that we do leak, because we leak God out to other people!

Prayer Focus:  We pray for all those who are ill or are bereaved   and those who care for them

From Murray
How are you getting on with the ten days of prayer?  How has it been working out making a bit of extra time to use the prayer leaflets?  Have you found a special time and special place to pray?  Have you learned things in the last few days which you would like to carry on doing?

Lots of questions to ponder!  Last Sunday, David Rhodes was reminding us (at our 10 am service) that prayer is hard, so we should pray as we can, not as we can’t!  Prayer isn’t easy, but it is at the heart of our relationship with God, so it is always good to learn and try different ways of praying.

Today we have David Rhodes preaching at our 10 am service.  David has recently retired as vicar of Totley and has been my prayer partner for around ten years though we first met David at our training college.

David will be speaking about prayer as we prepare for the Ten Days of prayer which begins this Thursday.  Do make sure you take with you a prayer leaflet and make plans to use it!  It incorporates ideas from the Diocesan leaflet which some of you may have received last week.
